Boomer's Legacy Fund: The AATF

The Boomer's Legacy Foundation donations are given to the Assistance to Afghanistan Trust Fund (AATF), which is managed by the Canadian Forces, Joint Task Force - through the Provincial Reconstruction Team. This fund was established in the fall of 2006 under General Rick Hillier's command. The genius of this fund is that it is accessible to soldiers on patrol who discover worthwhile projects, projects that may otherwise fall through the cracks if left to larger agencies - such as shoes for kids, or a generator for a water pump, a herd of sheep, medical operations, or blankets and caps. Currently, Boomer's Legacy gives 100% of proceeds to this fund.

Medical projects that were funded through Boomer's Legacy this past year include:

  • surgery for child with dolichocephalism (head is disproportionately long and narrow)
  • a wheelchair for disabled child
  • colostomy surgery for a newborn baby
  • surgery for a 14yr old with gun shot wound to right humerus
  • palliative drugs for a 15 year old girl
  • medical care for a 4yr old with spinal injury
  • surgery for a 2 month old girl, Habita, with a cleft palate
  • medical care for a Girl with rheumatoid arthritis
  • seven ventricular septal defect (VSD) surgeries for children (a hole in the heart)

Boomer's Legacy has funded special field projects as well:

  • purchased medical books for Mirwais Hospital
  • purchased science equipment for Shamsuddin Kakarrh High School
  • funded clinic infrastructure Bazaar E Panjawyi
  • last year a medic was able to purchase shoes for children in an orphanage, where previously all had had to go barefoot even in winter snow.
  • an infantry troop was able to replace a farmers herd of sheep that were blown up by a Taliban IED, giving him back the means to support his family.

Two of Boomer's Legacy many 2010 projects are:

  • start up support for a store run by Afghan women offering locally made wares. This would be the first time a women's store opened in Kandahar and it is hoped it would encourage others. Donate Now!
  • Funding support for a midwife program run in conjunction with Mirwais Hospital in Kandahar which would train Afghan women to provide a basic level of medical care for people in their own villages. This would definitely have an enduring impact on health care for thousands of Afghans. Donate Now!
