Boomer’s Legacy bike expanding this summer

This summer cyclists in three provinces will be raising money to help military personnel help others.

Founded in 2006 by Maureen Eykelenboom, Boomer’s Legacy was created to help soldiers help others while serving on foreign soil.

While deployed to Afghanistan Maureen’s youngest son Corporal Andrew “Boomer” Eykelenboom often shared with her through letters and phone calls how hard life was for the people living in the third world county, living with so little.

On August 11, 2006, hours before he was to board a plane to return home from his six month deployment the 23 year-old army medic lost his life to a suicide bomber in Spin Boldak, Afghanistan.

In shock over the loss of her son the military mom felt she needed to do something.

“As I sat on the plane and watched my son’s ramp ceremony from KAF on the news the overwhelming raw and unreal emotions that grew made me say, we have to do something,” she explains. “It was like Andrew was saying, ‘okay Mom, I have done my part, now it is your turn, help my buddies help these people.”

And she has done just that. Maureen created Boomer’s Legacy, a foundation that raises money to help soldiers help others. Since its formation of the charity it has helped soldiers help others in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Jamaica, and soon, Sierra Leone.

“Over the years Boomer’s Legacy has had the opportunity to make a difference in many lives, both our military personnel who through the use of these funds were able to improve the lives of the children and people of the poverty stricken area they were deployed to, and those people themselves, mostly children.” recalls Maureen. “We have raised over $740,000, the funds now go to Boomer’s Trust, which was formerly known as the Assistance to Afghanistan Trust Fund, helping our soldiers help others while deployed wherever in this world.”

This year one of the legacy’s trademark fundraising initiatives will be making its debut in Ontario. From its original conception on Vancouver Island, the Boomer Ride has grown to also include a ride on the East Coast.

The Boomer’s National Capital Region Ride will take place on June 9. The ride begins and ends at Canadian Forces Station Leitrim. Riders will bike 111 km through the National Capital Region.

Following the Boomer’s NCR Ride cyclists in BC will bike from Comox to Victoria on June 14 and 15.

And the 2013 Boomer’s Legacy Nova Scotia Ride departs 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia and ends at the Citadel Hill, Halifax. The 176 km ride takes place on Sept. 14.

Each of the cyclists will carry, on their bikes, the biography of one or two of our fallen soldiers. All fallen soldiers will be represented throughout each ride.

Organizers hope that for each ride residents from the towns and cities the ride proceeds through will support this unique event by wearing red, standing along the roadside waving Canadian flags and calling out encouraging comments to the cyclists. People can also sponsor a cyclist or donate online.

Registration is still open and riders can register at www.boomerslegacy.ca/ride. All donations can be made on the www.boomerslegacy.ca website.

Just to let you know with the help of Disaster Aid Canada, we were able to bring in some of your comfort kits to a orphanage in Dala Township Myanmar this past March 2013.
